How to Calculate a Marketplace Selling Price Without Missing Fees

Calculate marketplace selling price using product cost, commission, taxes, advertising, logistics, fixed fees and target margin.

A sustainable selling price needs to cover more than the product cost. Marketplace fees, taxes, logistics, advertising and the desired profit margin can materially change the final number.

Start with fixed costs per unit

List the product acquisition cost, packaging, subsidized shipping or logistics, handling and any other fixed cost associated with a single sale.

Also include fixed transaction charges when the marketplace applies a flat fee per order or per item.

Add percentage-based costs

Percentage costs are applied to the sale price. Common examples include marketplace commission, taxes, advertising spend and other variable fees.

Because these costs depend on the final price, simply adding a percentage to product cost can produce the wrong result.

Include the desired margin correctly

If you want a 20% net margin on the final selling price, the target profit is 20% of what the customer pays, not 20% of the product cost.

That distinction is why a pricing calculator solves the selling price using fixed costs divided by the percentage of revenue that remains after variable fees and target margin.

Example of the formula

If fixed costs total 32 currency units, variable fees total 22% and the desired margin is 20%, 58% of the selling price remains to cover fixed costs. The estimated selling price is therefore 32 divided by 0.58.

The result should then be compared with the market, competitors, shipping policy and your actual conversion rate.

Review pricing regularly

Marketplace commissions, advertising costs, tax rules and logistics expenses can change. A profitable price today may not remain profitable after a fee change.

Review the inputs periodically and whenever a platform changes its commercial rules.

Frequently asked questions

Should profit margin be calculated on cost or sale price?

This calculator treats the desired margin as a percentage of the final sale price.

Why does a high fee plus margin combination make the price very high?

Because less of each sales dollar remains to cover fixed costs. If fees plus margin approach 100%, the formula becomes impractical.

Does the calculator know the current fee of every marketplace?

No. It is generic, so you should enter the current fees that apply to your account and category.
